Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) announced Thursday that it registered a total of 2,203 new domain names which is about 43 per cent increase from last year. It also recorded 1,375 domain renewals and 80 transfers.
NiRA said that this is a good start when compared to last years record. “In the January 2015, we had 1,542 new domain registrations, 1,029 renewals and 41 transfers. This is a good start for the year, building on the previous year’s foundation, to buttress the point that the awareness and appreciation of .ng is on the increase.” NiRA said there are more companies advertising their .ng domain name. In our earlier report, we noted that NiRA registered a total of 22,113 domain name in 2015.
The Association noted that the renewal was 14,462domain names, added that the figures for 2014 were 18,870 and 11,319 respectively.
“We also witnessed an increase in the number of NiRA Accredited Registrars with an increase of five. NiRA can now boast of having 53 Accredited Registrars.”
It added that the agency are hopeful the numbers would increase in 2016 with the additional accreditation of local and foreign Registrars. It has been proved that with more Registrars across the country, Nigerian presence online would increase, NiRA said.
