Nigeria Internet registration Association (NiRA) has revealed Tuesday in Lagos that the Association’s greatest challenge in the past 10 years has been very low uptake of .ng domain name by Nigerians.

Speaking at a press conference to announce series of programmes to mark a decade of operation, former president of NiRA, Mrs Mary Uduma said not many Nigerians registered Country Level Top Domain (ccTLD) name .ng. She said this may not be unconnected to Nigerians attitude towards foreign names like .com, adding that NiRA will work to change that sentiment in the coming years.

Speaking at the event, NiRA President,   Rev Sunday Folayan said the Association registered exactly 59,842 domain names in 10 year. He noted that this is a far cry considering thatvthe population of the country is over 170 million. According to him, “129 are in the top level. 4400 are within second level while 10,000 are within third level category.”

Chairman Board of Trustees , Deacon Chinma Onyekwere said today, NiRA announced the commencement of NiRA’s 10th year anniversary  with this press conferences. “NiRA, the leading Country Code Top Level Doamin Name Registry in West Africa, is proud to celebrate a decade of managing Nigeria’s critical national resource and identity flagship on the Internet , the .ng name string.”

Nigeria Internet registration Association (NiRA) was established on March 28, 2016 when stakeholders within the Nigerian internet industry got together to adopt its constitution, under the stewardship of an Interim board of Trustees  (iBOT)
