Nigeria Telecoms Stakeholders Honour NCC Chief, Danbatta

Key players in Nigeria’s telecoms subsector have on Friday organized “A Special & High-powered Reception” in honour of Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta as he marks his one year in office.
The event was organized by Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) in collaboration with 18 companies. In his opening remarks, ATCON President, Mr Olusola Teniola said the unusual event is to formally welcome Danbatta into Nigerian telecoms industry and in recognition of his contribution to telecoms industry.
He added that NCC Head has entrenched openness and level playing field in the country’s mobile environment.
Mr Teniola pledged ATCON’s commitment to work with NCC.
In his response, NCC Chief commended the organizers, adding that this is a testimony that stakeholders notice our efforts to make the industry work.
He praised NCC staff for their professionalism and dedication to work. “I inherited an excellent work force.” and I praise them for their “ability to deliver when the stakes are high.”

Peaking further, Dnabatta said “just over a decade ago Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem came to my office at Digital Bridge Institute. Looking straight into my eye, he said the industry has not accepted you. I thought deeply and asked myself: why can’t I be accepted?
“This grand reception indicates that I am now accepted into the Nigerian telecoms industry.”
“I unveiled 8-point agenda aimed at growing telecoms industry from 2015 to 2020. I told you in this hall that my leadership will focus on ‘’the 8-point pillars rest on a tripod of ‘A’s which include Availability of service, Accessibility of Service and Affordability of Service in line with the Buhari Change agenda.”
In his response, Dr Ekuwem admired the NCC boss for his tenacity, intelligence and commitment to the industry. “He is a professor because he is intelligent,” he said.
NCC Chief was confirmation on November 27, 2015 as Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC.
He was appointed in Acting capacity by President Muhammadu Buhari on August 4, 2015 following the expiration of Dr. Eugene Juwah’s tenure.
Born in Danbatta Local Government Council of Kano State, Prof. Danbatta was the Acting Vice Chancellor, Kano State University of Science & Technology, Wudil.
He was Vice President Academics and Students Affairs, Kano Campus of Digital Bridge Institute from May 2007 through January 2012.
He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and a BEng and MSc from the Technical University of Wroclaw, Poland.
He also served as a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Technology of Bayero University Kano for 28 years, where he taught courses in telecommunications engineering and electronics and held academic positions of Dean of the Faculty and Head of Department.
ATCON organized the event in collaboration with 21st Century Technologies Limkited, Backbone Connectivity Network, Airtel Nigeria, Vodacom, and VDT Communications. Others are Information Connectivity Solutions Limited, Wapic, Broadbased Communications, and Tecno. Still others are ntel, MTN, e-Stream, Teledom and lots more. Globacom and Etisalat were not among because they are not members of ATCON.
