United States administration led by president Joe Biden has condemned the ongoing suspension of Twitter has called on the Nigerian government under President Muhammadu Buhari to unlock the ban.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said this on Thursday at the White House, adding that “unduly restricting” people’s right to “report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy.”
Recalled, Federal Government of Nigeria indefinitely suspended the operations of the microblogging and social networking service in the country Friday.
The State Department urged Nigeria to reverse its suspension of Twitter because freedom of expression is vital to democracy.
“The United States condemns the ongoing suspension of Twitter by the Nigerian government and subsequent threats to arrest and prosecute Nigerians who use Twitter,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Thursday, adding that “unduly restricting” people’s right to “report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy.”
US said it supports Nigeria “as it works towards unity, peace, and prosperity“, adding that “freedom of expression and access to information both online and offline are foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies.”
