IT News Nigeria:

Russia is set to carryout a new law that says any social media with over 500,000 users must establish office in the country by the end of 2021, putting at least 13 companies including Google, Apple, Tiktok among others on exit list.

This is according to the state communications regulator Roskomnadzor Monday.

The law to compel foreign firms to set up in Russia was passed July 1, 2021. The regulator list companies that must comply by year end.

The apex watchdog Roskomnadzor said firms that violate the legislation could face advertising, data collection and money transfer restrictions, or outright bans.

According to report, Russia has taken steps this year to support and promote its domestic tech sector over Silicon Valley alternatives, proposing taxes on foreign-owned digital services, tax cuts for domestic IT firms and requiring smartphones, computers and other devices bought in Russia to offer users Russian software on start-up.

The industry umpire also revealed that in addition to having representation in Russia, firms must open an account on the regulator’s website and have a feedback form for interacting with Russian users.

And that “Foreign entities are required to limit access to information that violates Russian legislation.”
