2015 ATM/Card-Related Fraud Cases Increase By 12% – NDIC

The frequency of cases involving ATM/card-related fraud cases jumped from 7,181 in 2014 to 8,039 in 2015, an increase of 11.95 percent in Nigeria, according to Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

The corporationalso  stated in its 2015 performance scorecard released on Tuesday that actual loss suffered by the banks, however, decreased by N3.02 billion or 48.79 percent from N6.19 billion in 2014 to N3.17 billion in 2015, with internet banking fraud accounting for N857 million, or 27 percent of total actual loss.

NDIC has said that banks’ casual workers or temporary staff stole about N7 billion or 38.6 percent of the N18.02 billion forgeries and frauds reported by financial institutions in 2015.

NDIC’s scorecard for the year indicated that incidences of fraud rose by 15.71 percent to a total of 12,279 from 10,612 in 2014.

However, the amount involved fell by N7.59 billion or 29.63 percent from N25.608 billion recorded in 2014 to N18.021 billion in 2015.

The loss suffered by the industry due to such frauds declined significantly by 59.4 percent from previous year figure of N1.242 billion to N0.504 billion, representing 15.9 percent of total industry loss to frauds and forgeries,” the statement noted, adding that 425 of such cases were attributed to staff. This represents a decrease from 465 in 2014, even as “losses arising there from substantially decreased by 70 percent from N3.165 billion in 2014 to N0.979 billion in 2015.

It further noted that the highest percentage of frauds and forgeries, which stood at 38.59 percent, was perpetrated by temporary or casual staff.
