Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that it will ensure a healthy telecoms industry as well as protect the interest of millions of mobile users in the country.

Executive Vice Chairman(EVC) of NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta revealed this in Lagos during the 81st edition of the Telecoms Consumer Parliament (TCP) themed: “Celebrating the Nigerian Consumers”.

According to him, the aggressive enforcement of the Code of Corporate Governance in the telecom industry will ensure subscribers get value for money while operators continue to operate as viable businesses.

As apex industry regulator, Danbatta said NCC’s initiatives such as SIM card registration, 2442 and 622 short codes and the continuous TCP are aimed at ensuring consumer satisfaction and protection.

EVC who was represented by the Executive Commission, Stakeholders Management, NCC, Mr Sunday Dare, said phone users should to take advantage of the short-code 2442 to stop or manage unsolicited messages and to call the 622 toll free line to escalate complaints reported to service providers that have not been resolved satisfactorily.

He noted that NCC is out for a win win situation for the mobile subscribers and the intestors, adding, the commission would continue to look out for and protect the interest of the consumer, without compromising the interests of other stakeholders in the industry.

”The consumer deserves all the credits for the past and indeed the future successes of this industry. The Nigerian telecommunications consumers is at the centre stage of our regulation. We at the NCC, being consumer centric regulatory organisation has decided to celebrate consumers of the Nigerian telecommunications industry consistent with the eight point agent that I set out when I assumed office in 2015. ”While the number two item of the agenda addresses improved quality of service, item six is concerned with protection and empowerment of the telecommunications consumers,” he said.

According to NCC, that the commission would carry out its regulatory functions to ensure that the companies operating in the industry were healthy and that the regulatory body had made interventions to prevent disruptions to consumer experience.

In his remarks, Director, Consumer Affairs Bureau at NCC, Mr Abdullahi Maikano commended the subscribers as there would be no telecoms sector without them.
according to him, the consumers represent the future of the industry, adding that NCC would continue to provide significant resources to ensure that the parliament was held regularly, for the benefit of consumers and the industry.
